In 2016 Dewain Barber and Ralph Bowman decided to make a book about the many humorous things that can happen in chess.
They asked some chess friends to submit stories, but the response was less than enthusiastic.
In 2018 they decided to try again. This time they announced in advance that all proceeds of the book would go to the kids who participated in the following tournaments:
GM Arnold Denker Natioal Tournament of High School Champions
Dewain Barber National Tournament of Middle School Champions
WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls Champions
John D. Rockefeller III National Tournament of Elementary Champions
This time the response was wonderful with 58 chess people submitting 184 stories.
The stories were submitted to Ralph and he placed them within the book and edited the entries.
Copies of this book became available on Amazon in both paperback and electronic versions in January 2020.
This book won the 2020 Chess Journalist's Award for Best Self-Published Book of the year.
