Jack Slade's father, Jim Slade, because a notorius gunfighter. After his father was hanged, Tom Cutler, a sheriff and his stepfather, taught Jack about the law and helping people. Jack became Tom's deputy and learned how to handle a gun, at which he immediately excelled.

After the death of Tom, Jack became sheriff. After several gunmen came to town to go after the fast-gun sheriff, Jack was fired.

Jack then hired out his gun to some small ranchers who were up against a rich large rancher with a dozen paid gunfighters for Jack's first time as a "Gun For Hire".

His second time as a "Gun For Hire" was when a fast gunfighter came to a small town and took over the town by bullying everyone.

Jack uses his mind instead of his gun whenever possible.

This book takes place in the following cities in Kansas: Colby, Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Lansing, Oakley and Wichita.
